BELOW IS THE LETTER WE SENT TO THE CORPORATE BOARD ABOUT BARON’s BEHAVIOR (no response ever received):
May 13, 2016
FROM: Bob Ayers and Lizbeth Ecke www.ynowsd.com
TO: John Maguire, Susan Mercure, Esq., Ron Ferrari, Phil Schneider, Tom Sudbury and George Howard, Esq. all via email.
In July of 2015, Donald Trump began in earnest making headlines with his campaign rhetoric. At that time, when referring to people coming from Mexico, he stated, “They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists!”. Shortly after, Mr. Trump “doubled down” by extending his aggression toward anyone from Mexico, Central and South American. Mr. Trump repeatedly described the “big beautiful wall” he would build dividing the United States from our neighbors to the south.
On Thursday, October 29, 2015 a full-day annual retreat meeting of key Y staff members of the San Diego County YMCA Association Staff was held at the U.S. Grant Hotel. In the evening skits were performed by staff members from various Y departments. The East County Y group performed its skit dressed as stereotypical Mexicans donning sombreros and sarapes while dancing to mariachi music. As “the Mexicans” were finishing, San Diego County YMCA President and CEO, Baron Herdelin-Doherty entered the room for his performance.
Baron was dressed as corporate magnate and Republican Presidential Nominee, Donald Trump.
Baron bragged to the captive audience of his Y employees about how he was going to build “big beautiful buildings!” a reference to the big beautiful wall of Donald Trump.
There was laughter. There were gasps. A number of offended employees got up and walked out of the presentation.
Over the past months we have heard about the events of this meeting. We now have an image from the meeting of Baron, President and CEO of the San Diego Association of the YMCA, dressed as Donald Trump (hair and all). Baron is snarling into the camera. The image clearly shows a Y logo on a sign in the background. La Jolla Executive Director and Vice-President Sue Ball also appears in the picture.
Baron used his skit to make a point. He chose Donald Trump to help him make that point. What point do you think Baron wanted to make?
Donald Trump is the only Presidential candidate supported by white supremacists groups.
Donald Trump insists that “large segments of the Muslim population” have “hatred” for Americans.
Donald Trump openly insults Native Americans, Muslims, Jews, members of the LGBT community and more.
Think what you want of Donald Trump. Everyone, even he, agrees that he is divisive. His confrontational style is part of the brand he eagerly promotes for himself.
Think what you want of Donald Trump. Is he the poster child for “youth development” and “social responsibility”?
Think what you want of Donald Trump. Is Kevin Washington’s emphasis on diversity and inclusion served by the CEO of the second largest Y Association acting in this way?
Think what you want of Donald Trump. Are there any other CEO’s in the YMCA dressing like him? Quoting him? Comparing their Association to what Donald Trump wants to build?
John Maguire’s statement of September 30, 2015 following the so-called investigation stated, “The investigation brought to light areas we can improve and we are committed to do so – for our employees, volunteers and members.”
Do the “areas” to “improve” include this? Does our CEO dressing as Donald Trump point us to improvement? Does our CEO dressed as Donald Trump bragging about building “big buildings” instead of “big walls” improve anything?
Do areas to improve include staff members wearing sombreros and mocking traditional customs of some Mexican cultures at the same event?
Baron’s conduct took place exactly a month after the conclusion of the so-called investigation. Is this the improvement John Maguire promised?
A comparison of Baron Herdelin-Doherty to Donald Trump is not without some accuracy. Mr. Trump is the President and CEO of a privately held organization. He is accountable to no one. We have observed for quite some time that Baron seems to be accountable to no one. He has insulated himself from the consequences of poor behavior by eliminating any one with the good sense to stop him. That Baron would impersonate a person who many describe as “vindictive”, “insensitive”, “juvenile” and “bully” is of no shock to us. Those phrases were used repeatedly to describe Baron by those who spoke to Deanna Baker.
If you wish to provide some insight, explanation, context or anything else concerning this event we would welcome hearing it sooner rather than later.
